I made this photo in the Many Glaciers section of the Glaciers National Park. It was a relatively short hike, five miles round trip, even with a 17 month old on your back it isn’t too bad. There are many people on the trail so the bear threat is low too. ( I still had bear spray but that was because I take no chances with my son ). Since I was hiking with my son on my back, I did not bring a tripod, but I still wanted to do a long exposure to soften the waters movement. To accomplish this I wedged my 5D onto a branch of a tree and shot a little wider then I normally would so I would have some freedom to crop and straighten the image. I also used the timer to trip the shutter as to not add movement to an already uncertain situation. If the native americans had DSLR’s this is how they would fashion a tripos too 😉
